What is Yoga?
Yoga means Union. The word comes from the root Yuk, which means to yoke, to join or unite. In Hatha Yoga one practices asanas ( physical postures )and pranayama (breath control) to find union of body, mind and breath. The body is strenghtened and prepared for meditation. Hatha Yoga is only one path of yoga, but probably the most well known in the West. Ha-Tha means Sun - Moon, always maintaining equilibrium.
What else is there to join? In Yoga you discover you are not separate from the Oneness. The connection between jivanatman (the human soul ) with Paramatman (Supersoul) is realized.
The Yoga path of devotion. This can be experienced in all our classes and at Satsang where we do kirtan, chanting of Sanskrit mantras.
The Yoga path of knowledge and scriptural study. All our classes are supported by a Focus of the Month on yoga philosophy. We encourage students to read literature and meditate.
The Yoga path of selfless service. Ultimately the yoga pracice and all actions should be done in a selfless and detached way, to benefit All.
